Whether you got these whoopers from mom, your middle school friends or a misinformed blog, it’s time to put them to rest. Don’t believe these blatant falsehoods about your over-the-shoulder boulder holders!
Bras help your boobs stay perky
If only. Unfortunately, wearing a bra over the long run hasn’t been shown to help breasts retain elasticity. Time, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding are much larger factors.
A good bra will last a lifetime
Sigh. Again, if only. The truth is, regularly wearing bras stretches out the elastic, so their lifespan is a year at best, and only if you wear them sparingly. Six to nine months is a more likely timetable.
It’s a wise idea to sleep in your bra
Happily, you can ditch this bunch of ballyhoo. Studies have shown absolutely no benefit to sleeping in your bra (see myth #1: Bras don’t really help your boobs maintain their perk).
Bras only need occasional washing
Only if you get them “occasionally dirty.” Bras are worn close to the skin, so they’re actually more susceptible to dirt, oil and sweat stains. A good rule of thumb is to wash them as often as necessary!
